Grinding your teeth, an improper bite, age, fillings and tooth decay can all be contributing factors in the wearing down, cracking or breakdown of your teeth. Dental crowns cover the entire visible surface of your affected tooth and add strength, durability and tooth stability.
A crown is a restorative that covers, or "caps," a tooth to restore it to its normal shape and size, strengthening and improving the appearance of a tooth. Crowns are necessary when a tooth is generally broken down and fillings won't solve the problem. If a tooth is cracked a crown holds the tooth together to seal the cracks so the damage doesn't get worse. Crowning or “capping” is also the most aggressive form of treatment for staining and discoloration.

Introduction
To prepare the tooth for a crown, it is reduced so the crown can fit over it. An impression of the teeth and gums are made and sent off to the dental laboratory for the crown fabrication. A temporary crown is fitted over the tooth until the permanent crown is made. On the next visit, the dentist removes the temporary crown and cements the permanent crown onto the tooth.
When done correctly, crowning can produce near-perfect esthetic results.

One half of the tooth has been prepared so you can see approximately how much tooth structure has been reduced.
The tooth has now been fully prepared to make room for the porcelain. Then two sides of the tooth are prepared with only a slighter taper to help hold the crown in place.

The new crown is being put into place. Notice the way it will fit up under the gum tissue to hide the margin (junction) between tooth and crown.
The final crown is shaped as much as possible like the natural tooth to look and feel good. It is attached with special dental cements

In the past is has been necessary to use crowns with metal bases to attain adequate strength and longevity. The main drawbacks of these types of restorations were that the crowns appeared dull and lifeless due to the fact that it did not let any light pass through them. In the long term, other problems like gum recession often results in unsightly metal margins showing on the gum line and in some cases the gums would also pick up bluish metal stains.
We are proud to say that those days are over! With the advent of computer aided design and –milling (CAD-CAM) techniques, it is now possible to create metal-free crowns which are even stronger than porcelain-metal crowns. In addition to this, the crowns now mimic the light transmitting properties of natural teeth much closer, so a highly aesthetic end-result eliminating all the disadvantages of the porcelain-metal crowns are possible.
