The Practice
BodyContours is delighted to be working with the Eye and Laser Institute. The Institute is not only a jewel in the crown of ophthalmic surgery in South Africa, but ranks as one of the best eye surgery clinics in the world. Consisting of five individual practices, its specialists have a combined experience of 65 years. Operations are carried out in a state of the art theatre dedicated to ophthalmic surgery and procedures. Among the Institute’s internationally recognised staff is the first eye surgeon in South Africa to receive certification for the implant of phakic Artiflex lenses for refractive surgery. And if you want to know what that means read on.

Your Eyes
Do you need glasses to give you 20/20 vision? If so you’re not alone. About one quarter of the adult population of the US is short sighted with the figure higher in many Asian countries. If you are tired of losing lenses or fussing over face furniture, refractive surgery could be the answer. It’s all about reshaping the cornea

Refractive surgery - surgery performed on the eye to correct vision – really took off in the 1980s with the use of lasers. Lasers allow for incredible accuracy in the minute surgery required for eye operations. Laser- Assisted In-Situ Keratomileusis (LASIK) surgery has been widely used since the early 1990s and reshapes the cornea to conform with the prescription for your glasses or contact lenses. Artiflex lenses are the latest in internal eyewear, like wearing contacts on the inside and permanently. Originally created for eyes where the lens has been altered, they have been available for phakic eyes - eyes containing the natural lens.

Accreditations
The Eye and Laser Institute provide clients with complete care in a tranquil environment. Its ophthalmologists have been selected to participate in research, present at congresses and contribute to international cataract projects. Cataract surgery dates back to 5th century, but the first time a cataract was removed from a lens was in France in 1748. Since then many millions of people have regained their sight thanks to this relatively straightforward procedure.

As members of the Medical Association of South Africa and the Ophthalmological Society of South Africa, Institute staff adhere to the strictest codes of conduct and professionalism. Ongoing attendance of national and international training conferences, ensures that their techniques are up to the minute. From the point of reception you are welcomed and carefully advised on the relevant tests and procedures. Not only will you leave the Institute with a clearer vision of the world, but a lasting relationship with your doctor and the clinic will ensure it stays that way.
